Inspiration for the M-DISC™ originated from ancient techniques used to preserve data.
Dr. Barry Lunt, professor at Brigham Young University, took his Boy Scouts to visit the Anasazi Indian petroglyphs located near Price, Utah. He discovered that the images on the rock surface were not paintings but were actual etchings.
The ancients had chipped away the dark rock to expose the lighter layer of rock beneath. Their writings can be seen today because a physical change was created.
A few years later, Dr. Lunt saw the urgent need for a permanent digital storage solution. He recalled how the Anasazi Indians had created the petrogylphs and realized their technique could be applied to optical storage technology.
